What the AMC clinical exam tests

Each station has one main task: taking a history, examining, forming a diagnosis, or managing and counselling. Patients come from medicine, surgery, women's health, children's health and mental health, in both hospital and community settings.

A station gives you a short clinical stem and often three or four tasks. Stations may use an actual patient, an actor, a video of a patient, a telephone call or a model. The AMC says the exam is built around its published list of patient presentations and professional practice topics, such as consent, handover and open disclosure.

How the AMC marks a station

Each station is rated on key steps, on three to five clinical domains and on an examiner's overall rating. AMC specification V8.3 says the overall rating alone decides whether you pass the station. The scale has seven points, and a score of 4 or more is a pass.

Our practice feedback is always an estimate. It is not an AMC result.

Choosing between the clinical exam and workplace assessment

The standard pathway offers two routes after the multiple choice exam: the clinical exam or a workplace based assessment. The workplace route needs a hospital or general practice post with a contract for the whole program. Read our page on the AMC workplace based assessment to compare.

If you are new to the format, what an OSCE is explains the basics. Our pricing page shows what practice costs.
