AMC workplace based assessment explained
The AMC workplace based assessment is a route for international medical graduates to assess clinical skills at work instead of sitting the clinical exam. It runs for 6 to 12 months, and the AMC fee is A$1,070, seen on 6 November 2026.
Where it fits in the pathway
On the standard pathway you first pass the AMC multiple choice exam. You then choose either the clinical exam or a workplace based assessment. You cannot be enrolled in a clinical exam while doing the workplace route.
What you need to apply
- A pass in the AMC multiple choice exam.
- Limited registration from the Medical Board of Australia.
- A hospital or general practice post with a contract that covers the whole program.
- A place in an AMC accredited assessment program.
Costs
The AMC fee is A$1,070. Assessment providers charge their own fees on top, and we have not found those amounts. Compare this with the A$3,000 in-person clinical exam fee on our AMC clinical exam fees page.
Choosing a route
The workplace route needs a job with a contract for the whole program, and it takes months. The clinical exam is a single sitting with 14 scored stations, and you can read about it on the AMC clinical exam overview. If you choose the exam, you can practise stations with an AI patient and try one free with no sign-up. See AMC clinical exam stations for the format.
