AMC clinical exam stations and AMC OSCE stations
AMC clinical exam stations are 10 minutes long: 2 minutes reading the stem, then 8 minutes with the patient or task. The exam has 16 assessed stations and 4 unscored rest stations, and AMC OSCE stations all follow the same timing.

You read a short clinical stem outside the room. It may include test results, images or charts. Inside, you complete the tasks in the time left. Stations commonly list three or four tasks with suggested timings.
Each station has one predominant focus: history taking, examination, diagnostic formulation, or management, counselling and education. Plan your eight minutes around that focus.
Station formats
The current AMC specification, version 8.3, lists actual patients, simulated patients, video presentations, telephone consultations and models. The older version 4.0 did not list telephone stations or models, so older guides may not mention them.
- Actual or simulated patient: a real patient or an actor.
- Video presentation: you watch a recorded patient, then respond.
- Telephone consultation: you speak without seeing the patient.
- Model: you work on a model, and you wear gloves.
Domains used to mark stations
The AMC lists 13 assessment domains, and each station uses about three to five of them. They include approach to the patient, history, examination technique, choice and interpretation of investigations, diagnosis, management plan and counselling.
Read our AMC clinical exam preparation page for how to build a study plan, and the pass mark page for how stations add up. See the AMC clinical exam overview for the full picture.

How many AMC OSCE stations are there?
