You are a GP. You are making a pre-arranged telephone call to Mr Rajinder Sandhu, aged 53, a self-employed plumber, to tell him the results of blood tests taken last week for tiredness and increased thirst. His results are in front of you. The examiner will give you any result you ask for. Speak to him as you would on the phone. The examiner will not take part in the conversation.
What this station tests
- Confirm identity and that it is a safe time to talk before giving results by phone.
- Use a warning shot and plain language; avoid jargon and pause for the reaction.
- Screen for features of an acute hyperglycaemic emergency before deciding that follow-up can wait.
- Give the plan and safety-net specifically, including 999 or A&E.
- Check understanding, offer written information and a follow-up.
