You are a doctor in a GP surgery. Mrs Zainab Hussain has brought her 13 month old son Idris, who is well. His first MMRV vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox) is due. She says she is not sure about it. Idris is on her lap and the nurse has gone out. Find out her concerns, give her accurate information, and help her to decide. The examiner will not take part in the conversation.
What this station tests
- Ask first, tell second: elicit the concern before correcting it.
- State plainly that there is no link between MMR vaccines and autism. Children now have MMRV at 12 and 18 months.
- Describe what to expect afterwards and when to call 999.
- Respect the decision and keep the door open.
