You are a pharmacist in a community pharmacy. Ms Priya Sharma has come in with her 20-month-old son, Arjun, who has had a fever since last night. She asks what to give him. She is the only adult present and is holding Arjun, who seems quiet. Assess the situation, advise her on what to do and give guidance on medicines, including safe dosing using the references available. The assessor will not take part in the conversation.
What this station tests
- Screen for red flags before recommending any product.
- Two products can contain the same ingredient; ask exactly what was given.
- Use weight and the label or reference for pediatric dosing; never guess.
- Follow Health Canada advice on cough and cold products in young children.
- A floppy, drowsy toddler needs emergency care now; give a clear 911 trigger.
