Review how she is managing her asthma, check her inhaler technique by talking her through it, and advise her on the next steps.

Chloe BeaulieuHi, I need another blue puffer. I just seem to run out of them really fast lately.

The task

You are a pharmacist in a community pharmacy. Ms Chloe Beaulieu, aged 24, asks to refill her salbutamol inhaler for the second time this month. She also has a low-dose inhaled corticosteroid prescription. She is alone. Review how she is managing her asthma, check her inhaler technique by talking her through it, and advise her on the next steps. You may assume you have placebo devices and a spacer on the counter. The assessor will not take part in the conversation.

What this station tests

  • Frequent reliever use means poor control: review the whole plan, not only the refill.
  • Do not leave the patient without a reliever; fix adherence and technique and help arrange the review.
  • Teach technique by watching it, and recommend a spacer.
  • Address fears about steroids and dependence honestly.
  • Give clear red flags and say to call 911.
