You are the nurse on a stroke ward. Keith Dawson, aged 71, has a fine-bore nasogastric tube and is due his next feed. A healthcare assistant is available. Introduce yourself, explain what you will do and check he agrees. Check the position of the tube is safe to use and, if it is, start the feed as prescribed. Say aloud what you are checking and why, and record what you have done on the form provided.
What this station tests
- Air blown into the tube and listened for is not a safe position check; use pH paper on aspirate.
- A pH of 5.5 or below is safe to use. Above 5.5 or no aspirate means no feed and a senior review according to local policy.
- Keep the patient upright during the check and the feed to lower the risk of aspiration.
- A coughing fit or vomiting is a reason to check the tube again before using it.
- Record the cm mark, pH value, feed and flush so the next nurse can compare.
