NMBI aptitude test and fees
The NMBI aptitude test is a two-part test run by RCSI: a theory paper first, then the OSCE. The fee is EUR 2,800 for the whole test, covering two attempts at each part. This page also covers nmbi aptitude test fees in detail. For the practical part alone, see the RCSI OSCE overview.
The two parts
Part 1 is a theory paper of 150 multiple-choice questions with four options each. You have 3 hours. The minimum pass is 50 percent, and you cannot leave before 60 minutes have passed.
You must pass Part 1 before you take Part 2. Part 2 is the OSCE. Both parts follow the NMBI education standards for nurse registration. Our page on RCSI OSCE stations covers the practical part.
Fees
RCSI states these figures. We saw them on 6 November 2026.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Whole test, two attempts at each part | EUR 2,800 |
| Whole test if an employer pays RCSI directly | EUR 2,500 |
| Extra charge when paying in euro through TransferMate | EUR 10 |
RCSI says the fee has not changed since December 2015. No separate resit fee is stated, because the fee covers two attempts at each part.
Refunds and withdrawal
There is no automatic refund of an unused fee, with one exception: the practical portion is refunded if you fail the theory part twice. If you withdraw and ask for a refund, an administration charge of 10 to 20 percent applies, depending on notice. It is EUR 100 if you withdraw before you have a test date.
Work out whether you will be ready before you book. Practice is cheaper than a lost attempt, and you can try one station free with no sign-up. See pricing and preparation.
Who can apply and when
You need an NMBI decision letter that says a compensation measure is needed and names the RCSI aptitude test, and the letter must be in date. A test date generally opens 3.5 to 4.5 months ahead, and you can apply only for the date that is open when you finish your application. RCSI pages showed 13 March 2027 as the open date on 6 November 2026.
